Sewage backup cleanup

A sewage backup, whether from a blocked main line, a failed sump, or a toilet overflow, is a biohazard job, not a normal cleanup. Water contaminated with sewage carries bacteria and needs to be extracted, the affected area disinfected, and any porous materials that touched it (carpet, drywall, insulation) usually removed rather than dried in place.

  • Extraction of contaminated water with proper protective equipment
  • Removal and disposal of materials that cannot be sanitized
  • Disinfecting floors, walls, and surfaces that had contact
  • Deodorizing after cleanup to deal with lingering odor

Keep people and pets away from the affected area until a crew has assessed it, sewage exposure is a genuine health risk, not just a mess.

What it costs

Pricing reflects the contamination category of the water and how much material has to be removed rather than salvaged. Category 3 water (sewage) almost always means more demolition than a clean water flood, since carpet, pad, and often drywall low on the wall can't safely be dried and reused.

FAQ

Is it safe to clean up sewage backup myself?
Small, contained overflows can sometimes be handled with gloves, a mask, and proper disinfectant, but anything involving a backed-up main line or a flooded finished basement should go to a professional given the health risk.
How is sewage cleanup different from regular water damage cleanup?
Sewage is classified as contaminated water, so instead of drying materials in place, crews typically remove and dispose of anything porous that was exposed, then disinfect the remaining structure before drying it.
The team insurance cover a sewage backup?
Many policies exclude sewer backup unless you carry a specific endorsement for it. Check your policy details, and ask the cleanup company for documentation you can submit with a claim either way.
